Helping Sustain the Environment: Power-Sonic’s Battery Recycling Commitment

At Power -Sonic, environmental sustainability isn’t just a buzzword—it’s integral to our mission. We’re dedicated to reducing the environmental impact of our products, continuously refining our processes to stay ahead of competitors and support a greener planet.
A Recycling Success Story
We’re proud to say that lead acid batteries are one of the most recycled consumer products in the world. Over 98% of lead from these batteries is reclaimed. To illustrate: aluminum cans have a recycling rate of around 55%, newspapers 45%, glass bottles and tires a mere 26%. Lead acid batteries, by comparison, set the gold standard.
This success is driven by the closed-loop nature of lead acid batteries. Typically, a new battery is composed of 60% to 80% recycled lead and plastic. When the battery reaches the end of its life, it’s sent to a certified recycler, where the lead and plastic are extracted under strict environmental controls and supplied back to battery manufacturers. The cycle repeats indefinitely.
This process not only shields the environment from harmful components but also proves economical, lowering costs while slowing resource depletion. At Power- Sonic, we encourage customers to recycle spent batteries whenever possible.
Why Recycling Matters
Here’s what’s at stake—and what we gain—by recycling batteries:
- Protecting our planet for future generations
- Conserving vital natural mineral resources
- Cutting down energy use compared to producing new lead from ore
- Reducing landfill waste
- Preventing toxic battery materials from entering ecosystems
Moreover, 98% of a lead acid battery can be reclaimed and repurposed into useful products, like guideposts, cabling, and even detergents.
What’s Recycled and How?
- Sulphuric Acid → Transformed into sodium sulphate, used in manufacturing glass, textiles, laundry detergents, and fertilizers.
- Lead → Battery plates and connectors are melted down, reformed as ingots, and reused.
- Polypropylene → Containers and lids are shredded and recycled into new products.
Power-Sonic’s Recycling Streamlined
Our recycling process is simple, effective, and environmentally responsible:
- Power-Sonic delivers new batteries to distributors.
- Distributors sell and install these batteries through resellers.
- When batteries expire, resellers return them to the distributor.
- Distributors collect used batteries and send them for recycling.
- The collected materials are reclaimed and sent back into production.

For Distributors:
Battery Recyclers of America offers comprehensive recycling services for both lead acid and lithium‑iron‑phosphate (LiFePO₄) batteries. This program delivers efficient, EPA‑approved recycling at competitive, affordable rates.
Be sure to check the program’s minimum requirements and recycling instructions for SLA and lithium batteries today.
You can explore state and federal recycling regulations at the Battery Council, and for locations where the Triman logo is used (mainly in France), it signifies extended producer responsibility—products are collected separately and must be disposed of through designated recycling channels.
Regional Support Channels
- North America:
Visit the Battery Council site or use Earth911.com to find nearby recycling centers. Always call ahead to confirm they accept your type of battery. You can also reach out directly to Power-Sonic’s customer service at (775) 824-6500. - United Kingdom:
Power- Sonic collaborates with G & P Batteries to manage scrap collection. We provide VRLA (Valve-Regulated Lead-Acid) battery bins for safe disposal. Each bin handles up to 1,000 kg, and we recommend about four collections per year.
For single or smaller quantity battery packs or cells, including NiCd, NiMH, or LiFePO₄ types, you may need to follow our Take Back Policy. Contact salesemea@power‑sonic.com or call (01268) 560686 to arrange services.
